On May 21, 2025, the Vaughan Multicultural Community Association (VMCA) held the second session of its Mobile Short Video class, focusing on key photography and videography techniques that bring creativity to life using just a phone.
Teacher led an engaging lesson on classic composition rules like the rule of thirds, triangular composition, and leading lines — all enhanced by the phone’s gridline feature to improve depth and layering in photos and videos.
Participants discovered how to use natural light to create atmosphere, including backlighting to emphasize shadows and silhouettes. The class also explored dynamic camera movements and underwater shots, with vivid photo examples illustrating the techniques.
The use of portrait mode’s “stage lighting” effect was demonstrated to highlight subjects, adding a professional touch to mobile photography.
Classroom energy was high as the teacher offered real-time guidance, answering questions and encouraging hands-on practice.
A dedicated group chat was created to share and review participants’ work, fostering continuous learning beyond the classroom.
Fun techniques were also introduced — like using a second phone as a mirror to capture reflection effects — keeping the atmosphere lively and inspiring.
Students left motivated to practice these skills regularly, share their creations, and grow together. Upcoming practical sessions, such as a nursery visit next Monday, will offer more opportunities to capture beautiful moments and prepare for the program’s showcase in mid-September.
